8 Ways to Boost Your Mood Instantly!

23/02/2020

As we begin to find our way out the other side of winter, it’s totally normal to feel lethargic and lacking in enthusiasm for anything as the seasons begin to change.

Even if you’ve been enjoying soaking up the summer heat in the southern hemisphere, you too might feel this as well. 🛌

I’ve focussed a lot on the dark and dreariness of the post festive period in my last two blog posts, but fear not, at last we’re through the new year blues. 🌧 For those of us living in the northern hemisphere, visible signs of spring are arising. 🌱

This week I’ve seen flowers beginning to blossom, trees beginning to green, and the upbeat and optimistic sound of bird song now audible on a clear day. 🌞 🌸 ✨

We’re not there yet however, so I’m writing this blog to bridge the gap between hibernation and rebirth as we approach the end of February.. (PS: how the heck is it already the end of February) 🥴

One of my goals is to lead and inspire to live a happy, enjoyable life without the need or reliance on stimulating substances. 😁

So, here are my 8 ways to naturally + instantly boost your mood:

  1. Go for a walk in nature

Be present as you go and make the conscious effort to observe how it feels in all of your senses.Smell the woody scent of the bare but beautiful trees, observe the birds hopping expeditiously from branch to branch, hear the leaves rustle against each other as the blustery wind swoops and swirls. Become aware of how it feels to experience the wind rushing through you too.

  2. Call a friend

Nothing can make you crack a smile or burst into laughter quicker than chatting to a loved one. We take for granted how easy it is to hear and see our friends by just the click of a button. Take a moment to appreciate this and above all, appreciate having special people in your life that love and care for you and your well-being.

  3. Drink a big, hot mug of tea

Rather than reaching for the quick fix coffee, try switching up your usual roasted brew for a soothing herbal tea. Tea is so soothing and comforting in the most wholesome way, and you can find an infusion that helps achieve the state you’re trying to achieve. For example: green tea for energy, ginger or liquorice for digestion, peppermint for stress, chamomile for sleep…. the list goes on!

  4. Hug someone

Still talking about a quick fix, this has to be the quickest fix of them all!
Hugging someone is so therapeutic and powerful in so many ways. Doing so releases the hormone oxytocin which is what makes you feel so comforted and safe in the gentle embrace of another.

  5. Do something creative

Creative activities have so many benefits for the mind, body and soul. It’s such a shame that they’re encouraged mostly to children and not during adulthood.
Sitting down on a rainy day and doing some arts & crafts, drawing, painting, even editing a photo/video on your computer are a great form of self-expression and challenge you to think of new ideas and re-connect with the imagination.
Creative activities are also great stress relievers as they are fun and allow us to follow wherever our minds take us without the fear of judgement by others.

  6. Applying pressure to acupuncture points

Chinese medicine tells us that there are many meridian points in our bodies which are energy channels where blood and fluids are transported around the body. Applying pressure to these points can instantly relieve tension, pain and tiredness such as between the thumb and forefinger.

  7. Quite simply, do something you LOVE

What are your interests? Listen to that genre of music you love and really pay attention to every sound that you hear. Notice how each beat transitions and evolves into something else.Read a book, do some exercise, cook your favourite meal…

  8. Meditation

Last but not least, it has to be meditation. 😜 I’m such an advocate for this practice for stress relief, focus, grounding, re-centring, gratitude, awareness, compassion, I could go on for days!!10, 20, even 2 minutes is enough to calm the often chaotic nature of the mind and help put things into perspective.

That’s it for today!

I hope these ideas are effective and rejuvenating!

I’m curious to know your thoughts and experiences doing activities that make you feel good.
