Are Your Dreams Telling You Something?

13/05/2020

Do you pay attention to the series’ of images and short scenes in the no man’s land of your mind while you lie in bed blissfully unconscious?

Can you even recall having had these experiences the next morning when you wake up?

Do you ever try to recall as much as you can the minute you wake up to investigate what your old noggin’s been up to while you were otherwise dead to the world?

If you answered no to at least one of these, why not try and pay closer to attention to the mysteries of your dreams for a few days and see if any patterns come up.

I’ve done dream journaling from time to time, and I’ve found that by paying more attention to the often bizarre scenarios that fill the canvas of my sleeping mind, the more I spot links and even repetitions between one night and the next.

Why do dreams happen?

The Activation-Synthesis Hypothesis states that dreams are caused by electromagnetic impulses stringing together a selection of the approx 70,000 thoughts we’ve experienced during the day in a jumbled-up order which result in absolute b-a-n-a-n-a-s.
The theory then states they have no further significance than that.

However, according to others like psychologist Sigmund Freud, he claimed through his study of the unconscious mind that dreams actually reveal our deeper desires and conflicts (p.55), often suppressed from as early on as childhood. Furthermore, uncovering our truest; untainted selves, our core values and the things that we long for most.

As a person who loves to find the deeper meaning in e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g and the hidden truths of existence, (helloo Scorpio!), I find it very hard to settle to for black and white answers like, “that’s just it, there’s nothing more to it”, when it comes to life.

Opening to possibility…

Investigating the true meaning of dreams in our world is often overlooked in importance and even considered as folklore or the classic, “spiritual woo woo”. 🙄
Through my own research and personal experiences, I’ve discovered that our dreams can indeed reveal aspects about ourselves or about the people and situations around us that require our attention. For example, highlighting characteristics about ourselves to be weary of as they could get us into trouble if we’re not mindful of our tendencies. Another example could be, foretelling something happening which could be disruptive for us, therefore warning to help us navigate around it or at least be aware.
These messages often present themselves indirectly through symbolism.

Dreams are essentially our most honest statements about ourselves and our feelings towards the many life situations we’ve encountered, as by lying unconscious, so too does our judgement filter which would otherwise be poised on standby, ready to filter out or ignore certain aspects of ourselves.

Dream journaling

Dream journaling is a really great way of finding out what’s going on in our subconscious mind and can be particularly useful if we’re struggling to make decisions in life or simply want to learn more about ourselves and why we act the way we do.

When you wake up in the morning, make your very first priority to write down on a piece of paper beside your bed as much as you can recall from your slumber vision.
It’s important to do it straight away before the mind goes into its daily wandering mode and then we forget.

I go through phases of doing this but let’s be real, it’s not every day you feel like sitting up and scrambling around to find the pencil that fell off the bedside table during the night and begin scribbling a bunch of words while you’re still half asleep…

But it is interesting to do it especially when you’ve had a night of multiple, vivid dreams.
Sometimes if I C-B-A, I just say out loud to myself everything that I can recall which is also effective and means you don’t have to move. 😁 It’s just nice to have your dreams in documented form if you’re looking to identify a pattern over a long period of time.

Examples of my dreams that have revealed information…

Information often reveals itself through symbols in dreams, and generally the barmier they are, the juicier the insight they have to expose. 😉
I’ll then Google search “dream meaning (symbol)” and check out one of the many dream decoding websites to see what the implications could be then consider how much I can relate.

  • Travelling: can indicate your own personal journey in life and the development you are going through
➡️Planes: can indicate new ideas or projects “taking off”; or looking to somehow “get off the ground” in life; or a current situation leading towards something new – whether that be a new chapter in life or a new mental/emotional perspective on how you view things
➡️Trains: can indicate you’re “on the right track” and heading towards what you want; or you could be literally “training” for a big event, a job or a goal.
➡️Missing a connection: stress in life & unhealthy life/work balance
➡️Late to the airport: can indicate being overwhelmed with work/activities in life & have lost control of time; or feeling like you’re running out of time to seize the opportunities that you want
  • Dead birds in my backpack: death symbolism doesn’t necessarily mean someone, or something has died, but can mean that a situation or chapter in life is coming to an end. Dead birds more specifically can represent losing someone who was once close to you.
  • Herd of dirty sheep: a herd of sheep could signify reliance on other people’s opinions/approval. But on a positive level, sheep also represent an impending victory and wealth.
Dirty sheep could be a sign to reconsider your plans and reflect on whether you’re going about something in a deceitful way.
  • Puppet on a string: someone in your life is “pulling the strings” and perhaps taking advantage of you; or potentially, you could even be your own puppet master!! – Become aware of the way you talk to yourself and notice how easily you believe the assumptions you make or stories you feed to yourself.

Always remember…

To take everything you find with a pinch of salt but, if you can make connections between your common dream symbolisms and your current life situations, they could be useful as you continue along your path!

Ultimately, I firmly believe all the answers we’ll ever need are within us.
If you can make a connection between a dream symbol and something you’re going through, try meditating on it and see if anything else comes to you intuitively.
If you haven’t tried meditation before and are curious, or if you’d like to learn more about what meditation is and how it can be a useful tool, check out my meditation series and guided meditation on my YouTube channel!

From my own experiences, I’ve uncovered information about my life with the help of my dreams, so I’m with Sigmund Freud on this one!
No matter what your own conclusion is, it’s always important to be open to every perspective as there’s still sooo much we don’t know about our existence.
