5 Low Calorie, Low Hangover Alcoholic Drinks

08/03/2018

As a 21-year-old university student, there’s no doubt that a drink or two make up a significant part of my life.

Whether on my Erasmus exchange in France or back at my main university in the UK, my drinking habits are not much different, but if there’s one thing that contrasts, it’s the attitude towards the alcohol itself. Need I say more than simply the words “Bordeaux” and “wine” to justify this. 😂 As easy as it is to buy a bottle of Entre Deux Mers for a fiver or even less, it’s even EASIER to do so multiple times a week… 😅
And so very quickly the initial honeymoon of arriving in France subsides as you realise you must stop getting carried away so easily. 🙃

Establishing balance in life is crucial to be able to feel happy.

Through balance we avoid deprivation of doing things we feel like we “shouldn’t”. As part of human nature, when we resist something so much for so long, we’re only going to end up caving in and consuming A LOT of whatever it may be…

The words “body is a temple” are no doubt familiar I’m sure, and as amazing as it would be to have never scarred our bodies with a drop of intoxication, it’s pretty damn hard to have avoided that in this day and age.

I love taking care of myself and nourishing my body with all right nutrients and minerals but I’m not gonna boycott every event or play ‘Bob’ for the rest of my life as that would just be deprivation; particularly at my age.

Whether the concern be between liver health or drinking all the empty calories that come from drinking, I’ve been thinking recently of how to still enjoy myself to the same extent but by improving the aftermath of the following day..

🤔 So how can you still get on a level but reduce calorie intake AND size of hangover the following day..?

ANSWER: AVOID SUGAR

  • Alcohol and sugar are both processed by the liver so for every serving of rum consumed takes double the amount of time to breakdown if coke is in the mix too. The beauty of the mixer is its magical powers in masking the unpalatable flavour of the spirit and so, as we know too well, makes drinking one, two, three, four, erm… drinks all the more inviting… 😏

✓ I’ve come up with a few go-to alcoholic mixes that not only get you waved but also leave you giving yourself a pat on the back the following day when you’re able to actually get up and do something with it!

  1. GIN, SPARKLING WATER, & LEMON

This is a greeeat one. I’m a big gin lover but not a fan of sparkling water so by adding lemon it gives some natural flavour. There are also a wide range of health benefits associated with lemon, which I guess kind of acts as a compromise for the toxicity of the alcohol??

  1. GIN & TONIC
An old classic, similar in idea to number 1 but more commonly drank as a cocktail in a more sophisticated environment than a uni house party. 🤔

  1. WHISKEY & GIN
A more powerful combination. The sweetness of the whiskey acts as a “mixer” for the gin but can add soda water to soften the kick.

  1. BUCKSFIZZ/BELLINI
Also known as ‘mimosas’ to North Americans. Wouldn’t it be great if we could afford to drink Veuve Cliquot every time we went out? 💅 But even going for a prosecco or sparkling wine, mix with fresh organic orange or peach juice containing no added sugar to turn into the old Christmas favourite cocktail and add in some mineral goodness! Okay this option isn’t on the lowest side of the calorie spectrum but mixing with natural fruit juices makes this concoction just that much better for you compared to a standard sugary drink.

  1. BLOODY MARY
Tomato juice is an acquired taste for the majority, but this drink is jam packed with nutrients and very low in calories!
The ingredients include: tomatoes and celery which have cancer shielding properties as well as several essential nutrients. Horseradish, a natural antibiotic for common illnesses and bladder protecting from UTIs. The latter is satisfyingly ironic as a counterbalance for the vodka! (Alcohol is one cause of UTIs generally)

Now don’t let the word M-O-D-E-R-A-T-I-O-N go out the window here… If you guzzle 12 G&Ts you’re hardly going to wake up fresh as a daisy BUT divide by 4 and the head banging should be less prominent than 12 vodka red bulls.

Also, these suggestions aren’t 100% calorie/hangover free but, make the conscious effort to swap out sugar loaded concoctions for a more forgiving medley.
You’ll thank your lucky stars tomorrow AND, you’ll feel less guilty for devouring that late night, garlic mayo smothered kebab on the walk home. 😉
